So what does DIY stand for? DIY meaning in english

In english, the acronym DIY means “do-it-yourself ”. This movement has been present in our lives for several decades. Still very much in vogue today, the idea of doing yourself consists of using our own manual skills to create, build, modify or repair objects around us. For example, these days, it's all about sewing our own face covers to protect others from the Covid-19 virus.

Doing it yourself has several advantages. Here are 7 of them.

Of course DIY involves a bit of work but here are 7 advantages of doing it yourself that will make you see things from a whole new angle.

1. Customize your decor according to your needs

Each house is unique and each owner has different tastes. For example, you may prefer light wood while others prefer dark wood. Also, there may be times when you're looking for a particular style of furniture and can't find it in stores. Therefore, the do-it-yourself option allows you to design an object that will meet all your needs. In fact, we created the Benk three-seat bench because we wanted all the members of our family to be able to sit around our table without having to pull out several chairs. Also, the current offer in store did not offer a bench of the desired size and they did not match the color and style of our table.

2. Create better quality and less expensive products

Nowadays, most furniture stores offer poor quality products that do not last over time. They are often made of fake wood and are relatively expensive. To get furniture made with better quality materials, you will have to pay a fortune. For example, a solid wood king bed could cost more than 2000$. However, doing it yourself allows you to create a high-end product, but for less than what you might find in stores.

3. Save our planet

Our planet is suffering and we need to find ways to reduce our ecological footprint and over-consumption. We often rush to throw away something that is broken. It's better to make and repair something yourself than to throw it away and buy a new one. On the other hand, when you choose to make an object yourself, you have the opportunity to use materials you already have at home. This avoids having to fill up the landfill sites even more. For example, the use of wooden pallets is very popular and avoids going to buy wood. Most hardware stores offer them for free. So, it's an excellent option to consider.

4. Develop your manual skills

Think you don't have the skills to make an object? You might be surprised to discover your hidden talents. It's often by making that you learn. Today, there are many resources on the Internet that can help us understand how to design an object or repair it. It takes time and a bit of practice. When you do a manual project, you become handy and resourceful. As a result, repairing yourself an object that you have designed inevitably becomes easier.

5. Encourage the local economy

As we frequently hear, to help our environment and the economy, it is more important than ever to support our local merchants. So, buying your materials locally to make a piece of furniture yourself, rather than buying one from another country helps support jobs in your region. It also means encouraging your family, friends and neighbours. As a result, every dollar invested in a local business comes back to you.

6. Have pride in creating

DIY can also give you a feeling of pride and increase your self-confidence. The time invested in a manual project automatically creates a special attachment to what you've made. So when you decide to give your creation as a gift or to show it to your family and friends, you will be proud of it. Finally, the people who receive your handmade gift are usually more touched by this little attention since they are grateful for the time you have devoted to your creation.

7. Be a happier person

Since the beginning of the pandemic, people are spending more time at home, which is why it is important to have personal projects. Designing DIY projects is a great way to occupy your free time and can be beneficial. Indeed, following a task such as a successful DIY project, your brain secretes dopamine, the hormone that gives us a sense of well-being. Also, during the realization of the project, your brain disconnects from reality since you are totally concentrated, which can make you forget many worries. In short, doing handmade projects is an excellent way to reduce your anxiety, so it's very good for your mood.
